ABOUT

About

Mustafa Topsakal

I am a Research Assistant and PhD candidate at Karadeniz Technical University. My work focuses on computer networks, network security, and Time-Sensitive Networking (IEEE 802.1 TSN). In particular, I study intrusion detection in deterministic network systems, protocol-level attack analysis, and the assessment of how attacks affect network reliability.

In my research, I examine the security dimension of IEEE 802.1 TSN mechanisms through simulation-based experiments and packet/protocol-level analysis. My focus is not only on detecting attack scenarios, but also on understanding their impact on network behavior, timing, reliability, and fault-tolerance mechanisms.

Alongside my academic work, I develop hands-on laboratory materials for teaching computer networks and network security, and I continue to produce articles and open-source workspaces that make technical topics more accessible.

My work focuses on understanding the impact of attacks on protocol behavior and system reliability in dependable, time-sensitive networks.

PROJECTS

Projects

Selected projects reflecting my work in network laboratory design, intrusion detection, and simulation.

Network Laboratory Design (AğLab)

AĞSIMLAB

CANLI

A structured network laboratory platform designed to support hands-on learning and protocol-level analysis in computer networks education.

The project provides a series of progressively designed laboratory experiments covering Ethernet, IP, ARP, DNS, UDP, TCP, and secure communication protocols. Students analyze real network traffic using Wireshark and command-line tools to observe protocol behavior and network dynamics. The laboratory is built on a layered, observation-driven methodology, where each experiment focuses on a specific network layer while reinforcing cross-layer interactions.

KEY CONTRIBUTIONS

  • Design of a multi-stage, structured network laboratory curriculum
  • Integration of theoretical concepts with real packet-level analysis
  • Development of guided experiments with measurable outputs
  • Emphasis on protocol behavior and traffic interpretation

TSN Intrusion Detection Framework

TSN IDS FRAMEWORK

ARAŞTIRMA

A machine learning-based intrusion detection framework designed for IEEE 802.1 Time-Sensitive Networking environments.

This project focuses on detecting cyberattacks in deterministic networks by analyzing traffic patterns and generating labeled datasets for model training and evaluation. The framework is designed to support realistic attack scenarios and protocol-aware detection strategies. It aligns with my research on attack detection and behavior analysis in TSN systems.

KEY CONTRIBUTIONS

  • Design of a dataset generation pipeline for TSN traffic
  • Implementation of machine learning-based intrusion detection models
  • Support for realistic attack scenarios and traffic labeling
  • Evaluation of detection performance under different network conditions

INET / OMNeT++ TSN Simulation Workspace

INET WORKSPACE

ARAŞTIRMA

A simulation workspace based on OMNeT++ and INET, developed for modeling and analyzing Time-Sensitive Networking mechanisms and attack scenarios.

The workspace includes custom simulation scenarios focusing on protocol behavior, traffic dynamics, and attack impact analysis. It is actively used for studying TSN reliability mechanisms such as IEEE 802.1CB Frame Replication and Elimination for Reliability (FRER).

KEY CONTRIBUTIONS

  • Development of TSN simulation scenarios using OMNeT++ and INET
  • Modeling of protocol-specific behaviors and network conditions
  • Implementation of attack scenarios (e.g., sequence number spoofing)
  • Analysis of performance, latency, and reliability under adversarial conditions
